Using LockDown Browser and a Webcam for Online Exams

This course requires the use of LockDown Browser and a webcam for online exams. The webcam can be built into your computer or can be the type that plugs in with a USB cable. Watch this short video to get a basic understanding of LockDown Browser and the webcam feature. A student Quick Start Guide (PDF) is also available.

Then download and install LockDown Browser from this link:

[NOTE TO INSTRUCTOR: INSERT YOUR INSTITUTION'S DOWNLOAD URL HERE, IF APPLICABLE]

To ensure LockDown Browser and the webcam are set up properly, do the following:

  • Start LockDown Browser, log into [INSTRUCTOR: ENTER LMS NAME HERE], and select this course.
  • Locate and select the Help Center button on the LockDown Browser toolbar.
  • Run the Webcam Check and, if necessary, resolve any issues.
  • Run the System & Network Check. If a problem is indicated, see if a solution is provided in the Knowledge Base. Troubleshooting information can also be emailed to our institution's help desk.
  • Exit the Help Center and locate the practice quiz named [NOTE TO INSTRUCTOR: CREATE A BRIEF PRACTICE QUIZ AND INSERT NAME OF QUIZ HERE; IF NECESSARY, INCLUDE LOCATION OF QUIZ].
  • Upon completing and submitting the practice quiz, exit LockDown Browser.

When taking an online exam that requires LockDown Browser and a webcam, remember the following guidelines:

  • Ensure you're in a location where you won't be interrupted
  • Turn off all other devices (e.g. tablets, phones, second computers) and place them outside of your reach
  • Clear your desk of all external materials not permitted — books, papers, other devices
  • Before starting the test, know how much time is available for it, and that you've allotted sufficient time to complete it
  • Remain at your computer for the duration of the test
  • If the computer or networking environment is different than what was used previously with the Webcam Check and System & Network Check in LockDown Browser, run the checks again prior to starting the test
  • To produce a good webcam video, do the following:
    • Avoid wearing baseball caps or hats with brims
    • Ensure your computer or tablet is on a firm surface (a desk or table). Do NOT have the computer on your lap, a bed, or other surface where the device (or you) are likely to move
    • If using a built-in webcam, avoid tilting the screen after the webcam setup is complete
    • Take the exam in a well-lit room and avoid backlighting, such as sitting with your back to a window

Remember that LockDown Browser will prevent you from accessing other websites or applications; you will be unable to exit the test until all questions are completed and submitted.

Example 2: Information to add to your Syllabus (provided by Dr. Scott)

Online Course Statement: This course is being taught as an ``online course'' as defined by Oklahoma Regents for Higher Education policy. This means that students are not required to meet with the instructor in a classroom setting; however, students are required to take proctored exams which can be done in one of three ways: at ECU in a testing lab, with an off-site proctor approved by your instructor, or through an online remote proctor.  Your syllabus designates the dates of the exams.

Students wanting to take their exams through an off-site proctor have two options available: an alternative physical location or an online proctoring service.

  1. Alternative Physical Location:
    1. You can use any site that is a member of the National College Testing Association (NCTA). Participating institutions who are a member of NCTA can be found athttp://www.ncta-testing.org/cctc/find.php}{http://www.ncta-testing.org/cctc/find.php. An easy way to find one of these centers is to type the following into your favorite browser search engine: ``proctored testing centers [city name or state name].''
    2. You may also use an off-site proctor in a testing center at a community college or four-year university or college.
    3. NOTE: The cost of this proctoring service varies across testing centers and location. You, the student, are responsible for determining the cost of the service and paying for the service when rendered.
  2. Online Proctoring Service:
    1. Respondus Monitor is the designated online proctoring service for East Central University. To take advantage of this option, you will need a webcam, microphone, and access to a high-speed internet connection.

If you wish to use an remote proctor or an off-site proctor, you must send me the proctor's contact information no later than one week prior to the exam that you want proctored.

LockDown Browser for Chromebook has exited the beta phase and is now available as a final release. The Chromebook extension additionally supports the Respondus Monitor proctoring application.

Additional notes:

It is no longer necessary for instructors to enable the Chromebook option on a per exam basis.

* The institution’s license administrator for LockDown Browser can still block the availability of LockDown Browser for Chromebook across campus (typically, for situations where the institution itself doesn’t support Chromebook devices).

* Installation of LockDown Browser for Chromebook is as follows:

              - Log into the Chromebook and start the Chrome browser

- Log into the LMS using a student account, and navigate to the exam that requires LockDown Browser

- Select the link for downloading and installing LockDown Browser

- From the Chrome web store, select “Add to Chrome” to install the LockDown Browser Extension

The LockDown Browser for Chromebook Extension can also be pushed out to multiple devices by the administrator; please see the LockDown Browser Administrator Guide for Managed Chromebooks at respondus.com/login for instructions.
