Graded Discussions

Discussions: Graded/Non-graded With a Rubric

Creating a Discussion

  1. Select the Discussion Setting Icon to open the panel for your discussion
  2. In the Details & Information section, select the check box for Grade Discussion. More options appear (due date and max points)
    • The max points apply to one or more posts made by the student.
  3. When you enable grading for a discussion, a column is created in the gradebook.
  4. Under Details & Information, you can check the box to have your students POST FIRST before they see other discussion posts.
  5. Also, you can assign a Rubric to the discussion, do this after you select Grade Discussion.
  6. Rubrics can help you evaluate student submissions based on select criteria.
  7. You can also align Goals with your discussions.
  8. Be sure to hit SAVE when you are finished

Where to grade the Discussions

  1. In the list where your name appears, select Grades.
  2. Select the Gradebook Icon on the navigation bar at the top of the course page.
  3. Select the graded discussion(s) from the list. The Grades & Participation page appears.
  4. Select the Discussions icon on the navigation bar at the top of the course page.
  5. Select the graded discussion (s) from the list
  6. Select the Grades & Participation link.

     
  7. On the Grades & Participation page, select the students’ names to open the pages with their posts.
  8. Students’ responses and replies are highlighted on their submission pages.
  9. Type a grade and feedback for this student at the top of the page
  10. Select the feedback icon next to the grade pill to open the feedback panel. The feedback panel stays open so you can scroll through the page and add overall feedback (you could also embed a video or audio feedback in the editor).

     
  11. So, if you assigned a rubric, Select the Grade button with the rubric Icon to open the Rubric Panel.
  12. Directly type a grade there or select values from the rubric to add to the grade
  13. When you are finished, open the menu and select POST.

Finally, you could also go to the gradebook and assign a grade:

  1. New Submission appears in the cells for submitted work.
  2. Select View in the menu to open the student’s discussion posts and replies.
