Basic Guide to Online Resources

Troubleshooting Electronic Resources

General Tips for connecting to an electronic resource:

  • Try a different browser: Chrome and Firefox are consistently the most reliable browsers for our library's eResources. Make sure the most up-to-date version of the browser is being used.
  • Clear the cache: Clearing the cache can solve many display and access problems. You may also need to reboot the browser afterward.
  • Allow cookies: Be sure the browser is set to accept cookies. Many eResources require the use of cookies and will not work if they are blocked.
  • Delete cookies: Sometimes the browser will continue to use an old cookie or corrupted cookie rather than accept a new cookie from the eResource. Try deleting cookies, reboot the browser, and then accessing the eResource again. This will often fix 400 Bad Request errors.
  • Adjust pop-up blocker settings: Some eResources require the use of pop-ups for content delivery. Be sure the pop-up blocker allows pop-ups from this vendor.
  • Enable Javascript: This is a scripting language commonly used to make web pages interactive. Disabling JavaScript may cause some sites to not work properly.
  • Enable Java: Java is a popular programming language used to create interactive or animated web content. Disabling Java may cause some sites to not work properly.
  • Allow images: Be sure the browser is set to allow images.

Remote Access Links

Remote access to electronic resources is provided through the Open Athens WAYFless and redirector URLs .

  • When a user accesses an online library resource on a campus device, they are automatically granted access because the resource vendor recognizes the IP address of the device.
  • When a user accesses an online library resource on a non-campus device, they need to use a special link that will take them through the redirector.
  • The URL of a library remote access link will have the redirector information built in for certain providers.
  • When a user on a non-campus device clicks on a redirector link, they are taken to an ECU login screen before reaching the website.
    • This extra login step allows the library to provide remote access to anyone in our university’s system, including students, faculty, and staff.
    • Note: Since community patrons do not have an official ECU login, they can only access our eResources on campus using one of our computers.
