Interlibrary Loan

What is it?

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service where you can gain access to materials which are not available in the Linscheid Library. This service is accessible to current East Central University faculty, staff, and students.

What can I get?

You can request anything that the Linscheid Library doesn’t have access to.

If you can't find something after looking through the CatPac or through full-text articles in the electronic databases, you'll need to submit an ILL request to get access to it.

Most circulating books and copies of journal articles are available. Textbooks and other required texts are not available for ILL.

These items can be requested, but may be less accessible:

  • reference books
  • genealogical materials
  • curriculum materials
  • rare or fragile materials
  • audiovisual materials
  • dissertations

Loan procedures are regulated by the National Interlibrary Loan Code, by United States copyright law, and by the regulations and policies of the lending and borrowing libraries. Requests that violate these will not be fulfilled.

How do I get it?

Click on the form you need in the box on this page (upper left). Fill out the form with all of the details of the item you want, including your ECU ID and email.

Most ILL requests are free. Some libraries charge a fee for loaning items. If you want something from one of these libraries, you are responsible for paying the fee, but we will ask if you would like to borrow the item if there are fees involved.

ILL takes on average 10 days to be received after a request is submitted but may take longer. Be sure to fill out the "Item not needed after:" section on the form if your request is time-sensitive.

You will receive an email in your ECU account when your item arrives. Most articles are sent through email and will come attached to this message. All other items can be picked up at the Circulation Desk.

How long can I have it?

If you received a copy of an article, it is yours to keep.

For all other items, the loaning library decides how long a patron can have it and whether the item can be renewed. Usually, the loan periods are two – four weeks, and do not have renewals once the item has been checked back in. If you need to renew the item, call the ILL office at 580-559-5373 at least three days before the due date.

To return items, bring them back to the Circulation Desk.
