A guide to help faculty with common technology problems they may experience while moving classes online.

Respondus Tests

How do I format a test in MS Word to be brought into the Respondus test creator?

The basics are that the questions should be in numerical order and formatted like this:

1. Who directed the 1967 film Weekend?

a. François Truffaut
b. Alfred Hitchcock
*c. Jean-Luc Godard
d. Michael Bay

2. Who invented the "Cut Wax" animation technique?

*a.  Oskar Fischinger
b. Lotte Reiniger
c. Walt Disney
d. Max Fleischer

With the asterisk denoting the correct answer.

How do I create a Blackboard test or pool file using Respondus?

  1. Open Respondus.
  2. Go to the "Import questions" section.
  3. You'll get this screen:

  4. Choose the type of document file you write your tests in, then click the "Browse" button next to "File Name" and select the file with your questions.
  5. After that, create a name for your new test file next to "Create a new document named:".
  6. Click the "preview" button to make sure Respondus is parsing your questions properly. If everything's good to go, hit "Finish".
  7. From there you can edit your questions if needed, preview your test, and go to "Publish" and select the "Publish Wizard:
  8. On the wizard, select "Save pool to local file for manual uploading" so that you have a backup.
  9. If you want a reusable pool of questions you can use to build multiple tests, select "Pool". If you have a complete test that you don't want to do that with, select "Test", and create a file name.
  10. Once you have the file, you can upload it to Blackboard like a publisher-provided test file.
