CETL: Faculty Online Learning Technology FAQ

A guide to help faculty with common technology problems they may experience while moving classes online.

Video Conferencing

How do I host face-to-face meetings with my students online?

You can use Zoom, or Microsoft Teams for video conferencing. Check the rest of the FAQ for more information on these products.

Where can I find information on video conference etiquette?

If you want to brush up on your video conference skills, or give your students a primer on the subject, here are the OSRHE guidelines for video conference etiquette:

  1. Joining on your computer or cell phone app minimizes distortion and bad phone connections, so please join by computer/app if at all possible.
  2. Mute your microphone and stay on mute unless you want to speak.
  3. If on a phone, DO NOT put it on “speaker,” as this will cause distortions, especially if you speak.
  4. With multiple people who cannot see each other’s body language, individuals tend to talk over one another.  To minimize this, if you want to ask a question or provide comment, type it in the “chat” and I will call on you so all others can hear you. This will be difficult for those on the phone with no chat box, but we will figure it out as we go.
  5. If there are broad questions where we want to have an idea of what each participant has to say on a topic, I will initiate a roll call.
  6. For roll call questions, it is perfectly acceptable to say “no report” or “nothing to add” if you do not want to contribute or your input has already been covered by other participants to help keep our call efficient and effective.

My students are complaining of low video/audio quality from my presentations. How can I correct this?

Turning off video can sometimes help lower bandwidth demands for your broadcast and allow audio to transmit without disruption. Also, muting your audio when not speaking can save bandwidth and provide an overall better audio quality for your lectures.

Should I save my video to Zoom or VidGrid?

Our Zoom cloud server space is limited and growing full. Please create a VidGrid account if you have not done so, and move all videos you wish to keep there, then clear your Zoom storage regularly.

Any videos created after your VidGrid account will be automatically moved, so there will be no need for extra storage.
