Mac Files to Microsoft Files

Saving Files in the Correct Format while Using Apple Document Programs

If you don't have Microsoft Office apps installed on your Mac and instead use Apple's default programs (Pages, Numbers, Keynote), your files will not save in Microsoft formats by default. This can lead to formatting issues or inaccessible files when viewed by others in Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.

Always double-check that your file extension matches the required format (e.g., .docx for Word documents). Blackboard may not preview or properly accept Apple-specific formats like .pages or .key.

Even if you download a Microsoft Office file from Blackboard, opening it with an Apple program will convert and save it in an Apple-specific format unless manually exported back to Microsoft format.

MS Office Program File Type Apple Office Program File Type
Word (Documents) .docx Pages .pages
Excel (Spreadsheets) .xlsx or .csv Numbers .numbers
Powerpoint (Presentations) .pptx Keynote .key

It is important that you follow the guide below to save your files into the appropriate format. While the example in the guide (below) shows how to save a Numbers spreadsheet into an MS Office Excel program, saving every file into the correct format from Apple to MS Office works the same way.

NOTE: ECU provides Microsoft Office for free to all ECU students and employees. Download directly from the App Store and log in with your ECU credentials: MS Word, MS Excel, MS Powerpoint, and OneDrive.
