Transfer Students: Differences

This guide will help you transition from your previous library to ECU's Linscheid Library

Ever wonder what a librarian does?  A librarian is available at the Reference Desk all of the hours that the library is open except Saturday. The librarians' sole purpose at the desk is to help our students, faculty, and other library users.

A librarian can help you:

  • decipher your assignment
  • develop search terms for your topic
  • find the right database to search
  • find books, articles, government documents, websites, etc. related to your topic
  • find better results from your search
  • find  and use the right citation style
  • print/save your research results
  • find a book on the shelf

Stop by and see how a librarian can help you today!

Classification Systems

Libraries use one of two 'classification systems' to organize the materials in the library: Library of Congress and Dewey Decimal System.  Many public schools and community colleges use Dewey - which is based on numbers (see a more thorough description in the link below).  Most academic libraries, like ECU's Linscheid Library, use Library of Congress (LC), which includes both letters and numbers.  The links below provide you with information on how LC is organized and how to find materials.
