Geography & Geotechniques Project

  • Project concept
    • To use gaming to assist in decision making on aspects affecting communities
  • Project process
    • Cities: Skylines was purchased as the gaming software
    • IT installed the software in Linscheid Library’s Digital Humanities Lab
    • The software gives students a plot of land, and they have to build roads, and add utilities such as water, power, and sanitation.
    • As the population grows taxes are collected
    • As the city grows, police, fire stations, and schools are added andpaid for by taxes
    • Has weekly milestones such as population count, balancing the budget/taxes, and tracking citizen satisfaction
    • Students can add things like parks and other recreation resources
    • The game incorporates social media by allowingstudents to get complaints from their residents
  • Project continuation
    • The project will be continued for the Climate & Weather class
      • Students will design new cities, and they will be subject to tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding, fire, etc.
  • Project idea & influence
    • Dr. Chris Braun got the idea from his son who is an Emergency Management and Planning student at the University of North Texas. Braun’s son suggested gaming to his father and recommended Cities: Skyline
  • Success with students
    • Students enjoyed it, wanted to come back
    • Students appreciate what it takes to build a city
    • Students were able to get immediate results to their decision-making
  • Why the library
    • The library has the newest lab with access to Mac desktops, giving Dr. Braun’s students experience with different operating systems to help make their skills more marketable.
